La muerte de Jamene\u00ed se produjo en medio de un amplio ataque contra Ir\u00e1n por parte de Estados Unidos e Israel el s\u00e1bado 28 de febrero, sin una declaraci\u00f3n previa de guerra.<\/h3>\n

A su muerte, Jamene\u00ed era el jefe de Estado que m\u00e1s tiempo llevaba en el cargo en Medio Oriente y uno de los gobernantes modernos de Ir\u00e1n con m\u00e1s a\u00f1os de servicio, con un mandato que enemist\u00f3 a seis presidentes estadounidenses, desde George H.W. Bush hasta Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamene\u00ed fue un l\u00edder accidental, ya que asumi\u00f3 la presidencia en 1981 despu\u00e9s de\u00a0que asesinaron al gobernante en ejercicio<\/a>. Su ascenso a l\u00edder supremo tampoco se daba por sentado. Era un devoto revolucionario y protegido de Jomeini, pero carec\u00eda de las credenciales religiosas exigidas por la Constituci\u00f3n iran\u00ed para ocupar el m\u00e1ximo cargo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pero tras\u00a0la muerte de Jamene\u00ed<\/a>\u00a0en 1989, surgi\u00f3 como candidato de consenso. Para cumplir los requisitos legales, fue designado ayatol\u00e1 de la noche a la ma\u00f1ana, y se modific\u00f3 la Constituci\u00f3n para eliminar el mandato de que el l\u00edder supremo deb\u00eda tener el rango m\u00e1s alto en la jerarqu\u00eda chi\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamene\u00ed hered\u00f3 un pa\u00eds aislado regionalmente, con un ej\u00e9rcito agotado y una econom\u00eda devastada por la guerra.
